Biography
The work behind the title
Seth Blank is co-founder and CEO of Backplanes, which gives security teams visibility and control over what their AI agents do. He leads the company and its work with security teams, and founded it with Neil Kumaran and Nick Vlku.
Before Backplanes he spent seven years at Valimail, the email authentication company, joining in 2017 to run its open source and standards work and rising to Chief Product Officer and then Chief Technology Officer. Under his product leadership Valimail passed 30,000 customers, and when Google and Yahoo made email authentication a requirement for bulk senders in 2024, he was one of the industry voices explaining why that mattered.
His standards record is the credential. He co-chaired the IETF DMARC working group from March 2020 to March 2026, the years in which DMARC was revised toward a proposed standard. He is an editor of RFC 8617, the Authenticated Received Chain protocol that lets forwarded mail keep its authentication. He chaired the AuthIndicators Working Group, which created BIMI, from 2018, and is first author of the BIMI specification at the IETF. At M3AAWG, the industry body against messaging abuse, he co-chaired the Technical and Collaboration Committees and now serves as co-vice chair of the board.
He and Nick Vlku have built together since high school. Their social search startup YourTrove was acquired by Live Nation Labs in 2014. He holds a degree in mathematics, computer science, and physics from the University of Michigan.
In his own words
On the record
Email authentication prevents exactly one fraud vector: exact domain impersonation.
Email authentication is the single best defense against fraud and abuse. It provides protection globally, creates herd immunity, and protects against bad actors.
Valimail, 2024
Authentication will become the first line of defense against sophisticated cyber threats. And any communication lacking proper authentication will be treated with suspicion.

What Seth can speak to
- 01
Fully authorized and still wrong: why identity solves the wrong layer for agents
Identity and access decide who may act. Agents act across identities, endpoints, and applications at once. What a control layer for agents looks like, from the CEO building one.
- 02
How email authentication went from optional to required
A decade inside the IETF and M3AAWG, from DMARC as a good idea to Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft requiring it. What it takes to move an ecosystem.
- 03
No auth, no entry: what email learned that agents have not yet
Email spent twenty years learning that you cannot classify what you cannot identify. The same lesson is arriving for agents, tools, and MCP servers.
- 04
Herd immunity for infrastructure
Why the 2024 sender requirements changed every inbox, including the ones that did nothing. How requirements create protection for everyone.
- 05
Generative AI and phishing: what still holds when the lure is perfect
Authentication becomes the first line of defense when content can no longer be trusted. What that means for email, and for everything after it.
- 06
From standards to startup
Building a company on an ecosystem problem: what running working groups taught him about shipping products people adopt.
